If you’re looking to improve your home’s energy efficiency, it might make sense to learn a bit more about how you can get credit for it. Local, state, and federal governments all offer incentives for you to choose products designed to limit energy consumption. And the best part? You’ll end up paying less on your monthly utility costs. Talk about a win-win!

A Few Items of Note about Energy Rebates

Because local and state laws can vary, it’s best to check with your local department of energy and utility companies for any special incentives that may apply to you. However, the following is a high-level description of federal credits and benefits you can qualify for easily:

Qualified Energy Improvements

Claim 10%* for the following:

  • Insulation
  • New exterior doors
  • Exterior windows
  • Skylights
  • Roofing materials (specific kinds only)

Residential Energy Property Costs

Claim up to 100%* of the following:

  • Electric heat pumps and water heaters
  • Central air
  • Natural gas, propane and oil water heaters
  • Stoves and heating systems run on bio-fuel
  • Natural gas or propane furnaces (up to $150)
  • Natural gas or propane boilers (up to $150)
  • Advanced circulating fans (up to $50)

*Limits do apply to each of these. $500 maximum for all years claimed from 2006 to the present, of which up to $300 can be for any single residential property cost.

Don’t Forget Manufacturer Rebates

Ask your HVAC professional whether manufacturers are currently offering any rebates or incentives for specific models. Discounts aren’t indicative of a lack of quality; sometimes it’s as simple as an overstock of a specific type or style. Check to see if any of the products currently offered will work for you.
