Your heating and cooling systems are two of the most expensive components of your home. It's only natural to want them to last as long as possible. The good news is that there are several easy and affordable things you can do to extend the life of your HVAC systems.
How to help your heating and cooling systems last longer:
- Schedule regular maintenance. The single most important thing you can do to extend the life of your heating and cooling systems is to schedule annual maintenance calls before the start of the heating and cooling seasons. Such calls may seem like an unnecessary expense, but can save you money in repairs and replacing your system sooner than you would otherwise need to. You can save money by purchasing a maintenance agreement from your HVAC contractor.
- Keep your filters clean. Another part of keeping your heating and cooling systems clean is making sure that you change the air filters on a regular basis. This should be done at least one a month in the height of the heating or cooling season.
- Trim the landscaping. Trees and bushes that are allowed to grow around your furnace vent or your air conditioning system's compressor can hamper the airflow around the units and force the system to work harder.
- Install a programmable thermostat. Investing in a programmable thermostat allows you to lower the temperature in the winter (and raise it in the summer) when you are asleep or at work, thus lessening your HVAC systems' workload.
